Father Richards Reflections: 23rd June 2014

At this time of year the whole Church celebrates two of the best-known followers of Jesus: Saint Peter and Saint Paul. They were called in very different ways to follow Jesus. Peter and his brother Andrew (the Patron Saint of this church), were fishermen in Galilee when the call came to begin a different way of life. Paul had a different experience. After Jesus had been crucified, Paul was persecuting the early Christians, believing them to be blasphemers. His conversion meant a complete change of direction and his teachings have made a huge impact over the centuries.
At this time of year, sometimes known as Petertide, most ordinations to the priesthood take place as people are called to follow Jesus in a special way and to lead others on their journey of faith. Vocation does not stop with priesthood though. A huge variety of people from different walks of life are called to follow in the way Jesus showed us. This does not just mean doing particular jobs in church, but it means using our gifts to help the world around us to become a better place. When we choose to become followers of Jesus we find that each one of us has a place and that no one is left out. It is the calling of this church as well as that of every church to welcome other people in the name of Jesus. Together we discover the love of God and the faith and hope which enables us to face the future with joyful expectation. If you are not already a member of our church you are very welcome to come along and join us for worship.
