FROM THE PULPIT:

No matter how much we value our freedom we still need rules and laws. In fact it is these which help to preserve our freedom by pointing the right way for us and protecting us from harm. The Law of God - the Torah - was given to Moses in order to guide God’s people along the path of life. When we look to Jesus we see how he brought the Law to life by living out its precepts. No longer were there just words on a page, but a real example of how to live in a godly way. The words of Jesus in the gospel today illustrate for us what a life looks like when it is filled by the presence of God. We as the Church are here to continue to live this out. It is not just an individual calling, because no one person has all the gifts we need.  Together we are the different parts which make up the Body of Christ. Above all we need to keep our eyes on Jesus, so that we can be sure that we too are living out the commandments of God.
                                                                          Father Richard
First Reading: Nehemiah 8:2-6. 8-10
A reading from the book of Nehemiah.
Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, consisting of men, women, and children old enough to understand. This was the first day of the seventh month. On the square before the Water Gate, in the presence of the men and women, and children old enough to understand, he read from the book from early morning till noon....

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:12-30
A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians.
Just as a human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts, though many, make one body, so it is with Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptised, Jews as well as Greeks, slaves as well as citizens, and one Spirit was given to us all to drink....

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 18
The law of the Lord is perfect,
               it revives the soul.
The rule of the Lord is to be trusted,
it gives wisdom to the simple.
Response: Your words are spirit, Lord,
                    and they are life...

Gospel: Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
Seeing that many others have undertaken to draw up accounts of the events that have taken place among us, exactly as these were handed down to us by those who from the outset were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, I in my turn, after carefully going over the whole story from the beginning, have decided to write an ordered account for you....

FROM THE PULPIT:
Coming into the presence of Jesus was a transformative experience.  Whether people were drawn to him or not, the gospels do not leave us with the impression that people were indifferent.  In Jesus we see the presence of the God who fills our lives with his Spirit, bringing newness of life out of the familiar, daily experiences.  It is no coincidence that the changing of water into wine took place at a wedding feast.  Marriage is a sacrament which opens our spiritual imagination to the way in which God has made a new covenant between himself and us.  We do not enter into this through a contract which sets out terms and conditions on both sides.  It is a relationship of faith, hope and love.  By learning to live out this new covenant we find our lives transformed by God’s grace.  We need water to live, but wine can bring enjoyment.  Jesus came not just to help us survive the experience of life, but so that we might enjoy it in all its variety and richness.  Life is God’s gift to us, so let’s not live it with a mean and grudging spirit, but with a spirit of generosity, gratitude and joyfulness.
                                                                    Father Richard

First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
About Zion I will not be silent, about Jerusalem I will not grow weary, until her integrity shines out like the dawn and her salvation flames like a torch....

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians.
There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them....

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 95
O sing a new song to the Lord,
sing to the Lord all the earth.
O sing to the Lord, bless his name.

Response: Proclaim the wonders of the Lord
               among all the peoples....

Gospel: John 2:1-11
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited.....

NOTICES:
The weekly drop-in sessions continue to be held in the meeting area at the back of the church between 10.00am and 11.45am noon on Tuesdays if you want to find out more about the church, or just want to meet your friends for a chat and a cup of coffee.
READINGS:
Baptism is a one-off event with an enduring meaning.  It is the first sacrament because it opens up before us the life of grace which leads us to share in the life of God.  Jesus already shared that life when John the Baptist received him at the Jordan, but he was baptised in order to mark the beginning of a new stage of his earthly life.  This was his ministry, in which he would touch our humanity with the divine life and so bring transformation to the people with whom he came into contact, but also to all who would receive his message.  Baptism is not an act of magic and we need to respond with willing hearts and minds if the grace of God is to take effect within us.  For us, this is nothing less than the pledge of eternal life.
                                                                  Father Richard
First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5. 9-11
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
"Console my people, console them” says your God. “Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her that her time of service is ended, that her sin is atoned for, that she has received from the hand of the Lord double punishment for all her crimes.”....
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 103
Lord God, how great you are,
               clothed in majesty and glory,
wrapped in light as in a robe!
You stretch out the heavens like a tent.
Response: Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are....

Second Reading: Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7
A reading from the letter of St Paul to Titus.
God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God....
Gospel: Luke 3:15-16. 21-22
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, “I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”....

NOTICES:

The Coffee Mornings will commence again after their Christmas break on Tuesday 5th January.
NEW YEAR MESSAGE:
The birth of Jesus was first revealed to the “outsiders” rather than the expected people. In the same way the revelation of the child Jesus in today’s Gospel passage, though it was to more influential people, was made to those who were neither Jewish nor citizens of the Roman Empire. This foreshadows the way in which the faith of Jesus could not be kept to the people of Israel but shone out for the Gentiles to see. We have been entrusted with the revelation of Christ as Saviour of the world and this cannot just be bottled up inside. Our lives must be illuminated by this light which shines in the darkness of doubt and sin, showing us the way and guiding others to follow the path to salvation.
I wish everyone a Happy New Year, Father Richard.

READINGS:
First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
Arise, shine out Jerusalem, for your light has come, the glory of the Lord is rising on you, though night still covers the earth and darkness the peoples. Above you the Lord now rises and above you his glory appears...

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3. 5-6
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians.
You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 71

O God, give your judgement to the king,
to a king’s son your justice,
that he may judge your people in justice
and your poor in right judgement.
Response: All nations shall fall prostrate before you, O Lord...
